Summers Over…….It's Official
September 1st, 2008 by robin
I am back at work today, which means summer is officially over (at least in my part of the world). Whenever I am asked why do British people talk about the weather so much, I always tell them that is because there is so much diversity of weather to talk about.
We have in the UK had for the second year running record breaking rainfall, with this August having less sunshine than any August since records began. So being back at work means two things,
1. The sun will start shining and the rain will stop.
2. The whole topic of weather will get a new lease of life and all around the country once again people will talk about the weather with a new sense of enjoyment.
I had a wonderful summer, it was quiet and I did most of the things I had planned, the final trip was a weekend in Estonia with some friends one of whom was getting married in two weeks time. The capital of Estonia is Tallin, and it is a great place to visit the people are friendly and there is lots to do, even though my visit was short and I did no sightseeing at all, I really loved the place.
You may wonder as I did not do the normal tourist things, how did I manage to form such a good sense of the country and its people? Simple, for me it is a first impression that counts, the vibe you pick up instinctively which comes from meeting people, in a variety of situations, such as taxis, hotels, restaurant and talking with people in cafes and bars. The one thing the Estonians I met had was a very strong sense of national identity, and with that a strong feeling of pride.
I have visited countries where that was not the case, and many business organisations where the staff had no sense of belonging or pride in the company. As I look forward to the next year I have a feeling it is going to be tough, in business. I believe too that metaphorically the rain is going to be falling for a long time, new records in tough business conditions are going to be set I suspect.
So the better you feels about a sense of belonging and pride in your environment, from a large nations to a small one person business the less likely you will be bothered by or I suspect ultimately overwhelmed by the rain.
